I get a lot of questions about portion control ideas,  so I thought I would take some time to answer some of the most common questions I get.  Portion control using the portion containers has changed my entire life and the way I think about food!  So my goal is to help everyone learn to do the same because who wants to live their life dieting? NOT ME!

Q: What is portion control?

Portion control is knowing what a healthy serving of food looks like. Unfortunately, most Americans struggle with understanding portion control, and simply eat too much. They follow diets that rely on food scales or constant calorie-tracking to lose weight. And even the healthiest eaters struggle with portion control by overeating healthy foods. Knowing just how much to eat is often confusing and frustrating—but it doesn’t have to be!

With portion control ideas like using portion control containers, you can eat the right amount, reach your fitness goals, and ultimately live a healthier life. It’s simple. Q: What is the portion system that you use?

The best portion control ideas I have involve using  a container portion system that was originally part of the 21 Day Fix workout series.  But it is now used as part of many other programs and is also available as a stand alone program called the portion fix.

It takes all of the guesswork out!

Q: Can I use portion control ideas like this to help maintain my weight or gain weight?

You can do both! To maintain hard-earned results, simply use the maintenance calories instructions to sustain your current, healthy weight.

To gain weight, add calories to your diet by following the simple recalculation instructions in the portion control eating plan.

Q: Can I use other containers I have at home?

No, these containers are custom-designed for the container portion control system. Other containers may have the wrong proportions, which could prevent you from getting the best results possible. Not to mention, very few containers come in the variety of sizes needed.

Q: Are there recipes I can use to get started?

Yes! There is an entire cookbook, plus website and I have blogged many recipes including container equivalents. I also have an online group devoted to sharing recipes that fit with the portion control system!

Q: Are there any vegetarian or vegan options available?

Yes! The portion control program works for a variety of lifestyles including vegetarians and vegans. Simply choose foods that aren’t meat from the protein food list.

Autumn Calabrese’s cookbook, FIXATE also includes some great recipes that include vegan and vegetarian options as well as gluten free and paleo. I also have blogged many recipes including container equivalents!

Q: Do I need to eat out of the containers?

It’s up to you. I recommend transferring the foods from their containers to a plate after you ll them. This habit will help you learn what proper portions look like—especially when you eat out! I personally do NOT eat out of the containers. I just use them like measuring cups.

Q: Is Shakeology part of the portion control system?

Shakeology is not required as part of this program but is highly recommended to give your body all of the nutrients it does not get in the food you eat every day even if you are eating a healthy diet. 1 scoop of Shakeology counts as one red container in the plan.  You also have to count anything you add you your shake like fruit and nut butters.

Q: Can I eat out at restaurants when I am using portion control?

Absolutely! This system is a flexible eating plan, and we understand that special occasions do come up. When eating out, try to order foods that are on the food lists. When your food arrives, estimate what a proper portion looks like, and save the rest for later.  There is also a handy guide in the back of the book to help you figure out container equivalents.
