Why Do a Detox?

Today I wanted to write about WHY I am going through this 21 Day detox/cleanse.

If you are like I was 3 years ago you may be thinking….

“a detox is a waste of time and money.”

“why would anyone need a detox?”

“you have a liver that is all you need”

“all you do is spend all day in the bathroom.”

Yup…those are all thoughts I used to have.  Then 2 years ago I had perioral dermatitis and this detox cleared it up for good!

Even better I felt amazing. I had more energy. I have more mental clarity. I lost weight. I ended some bad food relationships I had going on.  It was LIFE. CHANGING.

Before I explain why I am embarking on another detox I should explain exactly WHAT it is I am doing.

What is this detox?

I am using a program called The Utimate Reset. It’s a 21 Day program that uses whole foods in combination wtih a variety of supplements to cleanse and detox your body.  There are 3 phases: Reclaim, Release and Restore.  Upon completion of the program you slowly reintroduce foods to see how your body reacts.  This will help you learn which foods are having a detrimental effect on your body.  For me I learned that dairy and meat were very inflammatory for me.

My thoughts during week 1 of my detox:

Here’s what a typical day looks like on the reset.  This is NOT an exhaustive list of ALL of the recipes you have to choose from.  Just a sampling.

Breakfast

Oatmeal with fruit or Fresh fruit (4-5 Cups!)

Lunch

Microgreen salad (6-7 Cups of vegetables and dressing) or raw veggies and hummus

How do you know what to eat?

One of the many reasons I love the reset is it takes the guesswork out!  You get a program book that tells you exactly what meals (complete with recipes) you can eat for each phase of the program.

Worried that you won’t like a recipe? No problem you can repeat recipes within the same week if there is something you really don’t like.

No scouring Pinterest or trying to figure out meals that eliminate certian foods.  All of the work is done for you.

Why you need to detox?

Even though the body is extremely resilient, our bodies have been pushed to the limit by pollution, pesticides, preservatives, and chemicals contained in nearly every item that makes up our modern world. These harmful items can disrupt the normal function of our bodies, which, in turn, can result in reduced energy, weight gain, and a weaker immune system.

Why 3 Phases of Ultimate Reset?

RECLAIM

In Phase 1, you Reclaim your body, accessing its inner chemistry and preparing it for change. You’ll gradually remove foods such as red meat and dairy from your diet.

RELEASE

In Phase 2, you begin to Release unwanted compounds that have been holding your system back and start the detoxification process. This phase includes a gentle colon cleanse and digestive support. You’ll now be eating a fully vegan diet.

RESTORE

In Phase 3, you’ll help Restore your digestive system along with other internal processes to maximum efficiency, putting nutrients, enzymes, and pre-and probiotics back into your body.

Why I am doing a detox now

Now I have explained what I am doing. Now for the why.

I ran a marathon! It felt AMAZING!  But it really messed with my body.  I was eating more processed carbs. I was 20 pounds heavier. I felt weaker overall than I had in a long time. Which is crazy considering I just ran 26.2 miles but running has never been my magical ticket to health.

BUT…even scarier was my liver was all sorts of messed up!  I had blood drawn in the midst of my training and my liver enzymes were SKY HIGH.  Like clinically high!  That’s scary! I was relieved to find out that it was likely due to my long runs I was doing during my training and is actually common with intense exercise such as running crazy long distances which cause severe muscle breakdown.

I kept saying I didn’t think that running a marathon was healthy, now I had my concrete reason why it wasn’t.  So I knew once I complete my marathon I wanted to detox my body to get it back to where it was prior to the start of my training when I was really feeling good.

Thus the reason for my detox.

Ultimate Reset FAQs

CAN I HAVE COFFEE?

No. Coffee and other stimulants are not recommended during the Reset.

WILL I SPEND A LOT OF TIME IN THE BATHROOM?

No. The Ultimate reset is a gentle cleanse and you will not be frequenting the bathroom for number 2 any more than usual. BUT you will be drinking a TON of water so expect more trips for number 1!

WILL I BE EATING ODD FOODS?

All of the food on the rest is available at most grocery stores. I live a small town and was able to find everything I needed.  It’s fresh fruits and vegetables, grains and a few vegan protein sources.

WILL I BE HUNGRY ALL THE TIME DURING THE ULTIMATE RESET?

No. You’ll eat three healthy, satisfying meals every day. Most participants found the meals provided them with plenty of food. Just in case, though, we also give you a list of tasty snacks you can eat while still maintaining your Reset.

WHAT ARE ALL OF THE SUPPLEMENTS I HAVE TO TAKE?

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ULTIMATE RESET AND MOST CLEANSES ON THE MARKET?

During the Ultimate Reset, you’ll eat three healthy, satisfying meals every day and take supplements. You won’t starve, drink only juice, or eat only meal replacements. You’ll become familiar with delicious new foods and recipes that will help you maintain your health gains beyond these 21 days. In other words, the Reset isn’t a quick fix. It’s a path to real, long-term change.

WILL I LOSE WEIGHT ON THE ULTIMATE RESET?

Probably. Most Reset participants have lost weight. However, they’re even more excited to have acquired new, healthy habits and released unhealthy ones. They’ve eliminated cravings for sugar and caffeine, learned delicious ways to prepare fruits and vegetables, and grown more aware of how different foods affect their moods and energy levels, making it easier for them to continue eating healthily.

CAN I WORK OUT DURING MY ULTIMATE RESET?

No, for the 21 days of the Ultimate Reset, we suggest you refrain from strenuous exercise. The Reset is already giving your body a serious internal workout. After your Reset, you’ll be ready to resume your Beachbody® workout program and benefit even more from your efforts.

I’M ON MEDICATION. CAN I DO THE RESET?

Check with your physician before beginning the Reset to make sure that it won’t react negatively with any medication you’re taking.

I’M PREGNANT. CAN I DO THE ULTIMATE RESET?

No. Your body’s systems are already working hard. Wait to do the Reset another time.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE RESET IS OVER?

You work backwards through the program slowly reintroducing foods.  You pay attention to how you feel as you add the foods back in. You may find there are foods that negatively impact you.

You can resume your normal exercise and join the Healthy Life challenge.

WHAT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS, OR NEED HELP UNDERSTANDING SOMETHING IN THE RESET?

Don’t worry! You’ll have the support and guidance of me your Coach every step of the way. And because I have already completed the Reset, I know how to answer your questions from experience.

I am writing this post as I finish up week 1 and I am feeling great!  The muscle aches and headaches are gone. I am sleeping like a baby and have more energy than I have had in a long time!
