Throughout my training I have posted random runner thoughts on my Facebook page and people always seem to enjoy them so it seemed only fitting to post a marathon edition.

Read more about my marathon training here.

So here it is the moment you’ve all been waiting for, my random runner thoughts marathon edition! Oh the meanderings and people I met in 26.2 miles.

Start line: OMG I am so nervous! I hope my body allows me to actually do this!

Mile 2: I need to SLOW down I am going WAY too fast and can’t keep this pace for this many miles

Mile 2.5: But I don’t want everyone to pass me!

Mile 3: that guy scampering into the woods totally has to poop.

Mile 4: Girl runs up to me and starts running next to me “is this OK with you” She asks. I respond “oh it’s fine” (thinking we will eventually not be running directly next to each other for very long)

Mile 4.2: I quicken my pace to lose my new friend…no luck

Mile 4.4: I slow my pace significantly to lose my friend…no luck

Mile 4.5 This really isn’t OK. I don’t want to run next to a stranger for the the remainder of this race!

Mile 4.7 I walk LONG after the water stop is over to lose my new “friend” New friend tries really hard to wait for me but finally gets sick of walking and leaves me…darn….

Mile 5: I thought this was supposed to be peak color…I see alot of bare trees.

Mile 5.5: TIme to start fueling…hello clif bar with nut butter!

Mile 6 was that an uphill…this is supposed to be a downhill course

Mile 7: There it is. Crap again running way too fast…damn downhills!

Mile 7.5: What is this sandy crap we are running in? I hope it doesn’t last long! This won’t be fun!

Mile 8: Oh look at that lady. I like her hat with the yellow daisy in it. Sorry to pass her.

Mile 8.5: This guy in front of me is driving me crazy…he is run walking. I get to the point I think I am going to pass him and then he starts running again. Damn it run/walk yellow shirt guy (this is important for later)

Mile 9: Oh hi lady with the daisy hat….now you’re passing me and I now realize you are MUCH older than me.

Mile 10: Oh T Swift…dance party time!!!!

Mile 11: I want to text Kelly and let her know how I am doing but I get no cell service out here!

Mile 12: Hi friend with the yellow daisy in your hat! we meet again. See ya in bit (I think as I pass her)

Mile 13: OMG I am halfway!! And I feel REALLY good. My pace is a tiny bit slower but not too bad.

Mile 13.5: Hi friend with the yellow daisy in your hat! We meet again. She passes me and then starts power walking shortly after.

Mile 13.6: Hi friend with the yellow daisy in your hat. She’s visibly struggling. I say “hey we are halfway done! We can do this! Time to start the mental mindgames to keep motivated” She responds “yes” sounding exhasuted. I pass her and never see her again.

Mile 14: Oh yay I have met up with another run/walk marathon group. There’s 6 of them following a very strict run for this long, walk for this long program. They can power walk like no other. I pass them mid power walk.

Mile 14.5: Oh hi run/walk marathon group as they pass me while they run once again.

Mile 14.6: Hi again run/walk marathon group I am passing you again as you walk See you in .1 miles!

Mile 14.7: Yup there they are…running again. This is getting REALLY annoying.

Mile 14.8: I kick it into high gear to try and lose the run/walk marathon group.

Mile 15: Alas I am too slow for them…and we meet again.

Mile 15.1: I once again WALK for longer than I want to LOSE run/walk marathon group for good. That was SUPER annoying.

Mile 16: I meet a 70 year old man running his 353rd marathon. He is passing me and kicking my ass. In other news I have now entered the portion of the course that IS in peak color! Gorgeous!

Mile 17: I feel AMAZING. Holy crap am I really going to do this??? I am a little bit ahead of my pace!

Mile 17.5 ” I’ve got that sunshine in my pocket. Got that good soul in my feet
I feel that hot blood in my body when it drops, ooh. I can’t take my eyes up off it, moving so phenomenally. Room on lock the way we rock it, so don’t stop” NAME THAT TUNE!

Mile 18: It’s run/walk yellow shirt guy!!!! I can see him and he is still going STRONG! Also the point where I shed my first set of tears and start to walk a little bit more.

Mile 18.5: Should I be emptying the rocks out of my shoes? They are little and not bothersome…I’ll leave them. It seems like too much work to take them off!

Mile 19: OK I need some new tunes….my mind is getting bored. A little boy band remix should be just right!

Mile 19.5: A woman in a pink shirt passes me. I am shocked once again that she is MUCH older than me and kicking my butt.

Mile 20: Oh god I am nervous for what is to come! Everyone says the last 6.2 are the WORST! I am 2 minutes ahead of my planned time! Go me!

Mile 21: I see a lady at the aid station…wailing on the ground with many people around her. As I get closer I hear her saying “please just let me walk the rest. I have to finish” as she sobs. I feel for her, I cry some more.

Mile 21.5: I am impressed to see a girl stand on one foot, take off her shoe, empty the rocks out and out it back on without losing her balance. I tell her how impressive that is at this stage of the game.

Mile 22: Some nice lady PEELS my banana for me at the aid station and is ready with her pitcher to refill my water bottle. Do I need to tip her???? Seriously the support on this course is phenomenal.

Start your training for your next race here!

Mile 22.5: I can see pink shirt woman off in the distance…still trucking. I pass run/walk yellow shirt guy.

Mile 22.6: Run to here. Walk to here. This is my new strategy. Is this the wall they talk about? I feel good while running and can run my normal pace, but need to walk more often.

Mile 23: Ok 1 more mile and it’s just a 5K left. I SO have this. More tears!

Mile 23.5: Hi new “friend” from the beginning of the race. I pass her and smile big. She’s looking tough.

Mile 24: Insert more tears here. I am going to do this. I am going to be a marathoner. HOLY CRAP! Only 5K to go! I got this

Mile 25: I pass spectators with beer. I ask where mine is.

Mile 25.5: Race photographer! Strike a pose!

Mile 26: I don’t want to stop and take a picture of the mile marker but I have to keep the series going! I took one for every mile from 20 on.

The finish: .2 miles left I pass pink shirt lady and run slowly. I hear a volunteer say after this corner is the finish. I take off in a full sprint, unsure if I can even do it and sprint the downhill to the finish.

HOLY CRAP I am a marathoner. More tears. Medal. hug from hubby. I wonder if yellow daisy hat lady, my “friend” and run/walk yellow shirt guy will finish. I hope so!

That was a ton of fun and I actually loved every minute. I never felt completely awful and I am SO proud of what I accomplished even if it was 20 minutes slower than I wanted!

See you in 5 years Whistestop Marathon!
